Wireless People Counting System for Libraries and Museums
The SensMax wireless visitor counting system helps libraries, museums and cultural institutions measure real attendance at every entrance, reading area, exhibition zone or event space. Reliable visitor statistics provide clear insights into how spaces are used throughout the day, supporting data-driven planning, staffing and reporting for grants and funding.
The system is fully wireless and battery-powered, making it easy to install without cabling or structural modifications. SensMax S1 and D3 sensors operate autonomously for up to two years and deliver data through SensMax SMX gateways to a cloud or local reporting platform. Because the technology is GDPR-safe and camera-free, it is suitable for all public premises, including historical buildings and exhibitions where privacy is essential.

Why Accurate Visitor Data Matters
Libraries and museums rely on trusted visitor numbers to plan resource allocation, support funding applications and measure the success of exhibitions or events. Wireless people counters help institutions understand visitor behavior without interrupting daily operations or compromising privacy.
- Improve staff planning – align staffing with real visitor peaks and quiet hours.
- Measure exhibition performance – analyze traffic before and after new installations.
- Support grant reporting – provide verifiable attendance numbers for funding bodies.
- Optimize building usage – understand which areas attract most visitors.
- Track long-term trends – compare seasons, years and promotional periods.
How the Wireless System Works
SensMax people counting sensors are installed on both sides of an entrance at chest level. Each time a visitor crosses the entrance, the sensor registers a count. The SensMax D3 model provides IN and OUT detection for occupancy statistics, while the SensMax S1 model counts total crossings.
All sensors transmit data wirelessly to a SensMax SMX Gateway with a communication range of up to 800 m, depending on the model. Every device includes backup memory that stores up to 25 days of hourly data, ensuring that no information is lost even if connectivity is temporarily unavailable.

Wireless sensors send data to the reporting platform via long-range SMX gateways.
Key Advantages for Libraries and Museums
- Wireless installation – no cabling required, ideal for historical or protected buildings.
- Battery-powered – up to two years of autonomous operation on AA batteries.
- GDPR-safe – the system counts beam breaks, not images or personal data.
- High reliability – stable performance in narrow entrances and indoor pathways.
- Backup memory – 25-day buffer ensures continuous data collection.
- Scalable across large buildings – ideal for multi-floor museums and library networks.
System Components
- SensMax S1 – wireless unidirectional people counting sensor
- SensMax D3 – wireless bidirectional IN/OUT sensor
- SensMax D3 TS – real-time wireless sensor with 5-minute updates
- SensMax SMX Gateways – LAN/WiFi and long-range gateways for data collection
Reporting and Integration
All visitor statistics appear automatically in the SensMax reporting system, which includes over 20 ready-to-use analytical and statistical reports. Institutions can access the cloud platform or install reporting software locally.
Reports include hourly and daily trends, long-term comparisons, exhibition performance, visitor flow analytics and automated email reports. Data can also be exported through API or MQTT for integration into third-party systems.

Reporting tools provide insights into attendance, trends and exhibition impact.
Business Impact
With high-quality visitor analytics, libraries and museums can optimize their staffing, justify budgets and improve visitor experience. Accurate data helps institutions plan opening hours, manage high-traffic days, and report attendance confidently to local authorities and funding partners.
Whether it’s evaluating events, understanding building usage or supporting grant applications, the SensMax wireless visitor counting system provides a reliable, privacy-safe foundation for smarter decision-making.
